After a rather troublesome repair on a laptop having some real windows update issues we fully reinstalled windows update only to be greeted with error message KB80070422 .
So after spending hours looking for a fix here it is!
Windows vista/ windows 7
click the start button (pearl) bottom left corner and search services.msc
Find in the list Windows Modules Installer
Click click and select properties
change startup type to :automatic
click start
select apply
then try windows update again if it still fails do the below:
Find in the list Remote Procedure Call(RPC)
Click click and select properties
change startup type to :automatic
click start
select apply
Find in the list Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Click click and select properties
change startup type to :automatic
click start
select apply
try windows update again, if that fails reboot and try again
